Planning for IDUG Planning for IDUG

I spent this past weekend in Chicago participating in the North American Conference Planning Committee meetings for the upcoming IDUG conference in May 2005. And it looks like it is going to be a good one. If you are a DB2 (or Informix) user, read more to hear why you should attend this year's IDUG North American conference in Denver.

If you work with DB2 at all as an IT professional, then Denver, Colorado is the place to be this May 22 thru 26, 2005. This is the week of the annual North American International DB2 User Group (IDUG) event. For those who don't know about IDUG, it is an independent, not-for-profit, user-run organization whose mission is to support and strengthen the information services community by providing the highest quality education and services designed to promote the effective utilization of the DB2 family of products. In other words, IDUG is a community of DB2 users that helps to educate others on DB2.

I have had the distinct honor of delivering technical presentations at IDUG events for more than a decade now, and as much as I enjoy presenting, I also look forward to learning from others when I go to this event. From the latest development news, to user-proven implementation tips, IDUG delivers quality education from the perspective of the actual user. You don't get that at a lot of other technical conferences.

Whether you are a DBA or a programmer...a system programmer or a data administrator...or anything in between, IDUG offers quality events that will provide you with a wealth of information. I think that IDUG is a better value overall than attending a week-long instructor-led training class. Think about it. At IDUG you will get the opportunity to attend over a dozen different presentations on various DB2 topics. Such diverse coverage gives you the ability to learn about more than just a single topic (like you'd learn at that week-long class). And IDUG offers even more. You can network with your peers, as well as well-known industry consultants and the DB2 developers from IBM. The vendor exhibition area provides you with an opportunity to hear about all of the latest and greatest DBA solutions and tools -- and you'll probably come away with a couple nice giveaways, too. Furthermore, if you come in on the preceding weekend you can sign-up for a day long DB2 seminar/course on the topic of your choosing, thereby coupling classroom training with the conference.

And if you want to get DB2 certified, IDUG is the place to do it. In fact, the DB2 certification tests will be administered during the show in Denver, so you can take them right during the IDUG conference. So study up and be ready to take those exams in May.

Finally, this year IDUG has collaborated with the International Informix Users Group (IIUG) to add significant Informix-focused programming to the technical agenda. Since IBM has acquired Informix it makes sense that the Informix technology should be covered at IDUG events, too. This collaboration has added about 50 Informix-focused technical sessions to IDUG’s traditional conference agenda of more than 150 DB2-focused sessions presented over the event’s four-day agenda. Whether interested in DB2, Informix or technology that spans the product lines, registered attendees will be eligible to attend any of the technical sessions presented in Denver.

With so many opportunities to learn I really don't know why every DB2 professional doesn't urge their manager to send them to IDUG! In fact, if you are having trouble convincing your manager to send you to IDUG, the good folks at IDUG have provided a justification kit for you to use when discussing IDUG with your manager. There is a discount for early registration, so the sooner you get approval the better. Good luck... and I hope to see you in Denver in May!

Other IDUG Events

For those who cannot get to Denver in May, be aware that IDUG holds annual events in Canada, Europe, and Australia, too. So there is an IDUG conference close to you that you should plan on attending. Details at http://www.idug.org.

The Most Important Reason to Go

Contact with peers is sometimes vastly underrated. They say that you learn from your mistakes. Me, I'd also like to learn from others' mistakes ... and successes.

Yes, the presentations are nice, the vendor displays dazzling, the parties are, well, loud. Me, I go for the 'tween times, the conversations at break time, the arguments during lunch, and the SIGs. Here is where I get my greatest payback: What are other shops like mine doing? What have they tried? What worked, what didn't, and why?

Example #1. Large Objects. I have an application development group that wants to implement storage of XML strings as CLOBs. I attend an IDUG presentation that tells me how to use and support them. And then ... I meet with several new friends who tell me horror stories about allocation issues, functionality problems, support difficulties, and more. Guess what I told my management?

Example #2. Migration to DB2 for z/OS V8. We want to do it. I attend IDUG presentations and numerous IBM presentations on how well this goes. And then ... I meet with several new friends who ... confirm how well this went for them! Oh, but you need to organize your migration project carefully, and don't forget these things (list of a few dozen things). Very good for me, good for my shop.

I'm Here at IDUG

Just wanted to add a quick comment to this blog entry from the conference. I am standing at a terminal in the Denver Convention Center at IDUG's Internet Pavilion. It is Wednesday and the conference has been great this year. A lot of great presentations, good networking opportunities, and a greate vendor exhibition area. If you missed it in 2005, be sure to attend in 2006.

And also, be sure to read Julian Stuhler's great blog on IDUG 2005 here at dbazine...
