Index Naming Conventions

My personal preference is to not use column names in indexes. It makes them too long. I prefer a standard naming convention that uses the table name in the index name and then an identifier to denote the specific index. As you stated, the column names can be easily identified from the data dictionary.

You usually end up abbreviating the column names so much that you really can't tell what the column names are.
